- Leading to the cross
- The Jewish Trials were all illegal:
- The binding of a prisoner before he was condemned was against the law.
- Judges participated in the arrest of the accused.
- No legal transactions including a trial, could be conducted at night.
- The use of violence during the trial was apparently unopposed by the judges.
- The judges were the ones seeking false witnesses.
- No witness was called for the defense.
- The court lacked the civil authority to condemn a man to death.
- It was illegal to conduct court on a Feast day. And the Passover was the holiest of the Feast days.
- Sentencing was passed in the palace of the High Priest, but law required sentencing to happen in the Temple (in the hall of hewn stone).
- The High Priest tore his robe which was a holy part of the ceremonial garb. Without it entact, he could not have legally place Jesus under oath.
- Beatings
- Blindfolded beating can do more damage because the blows can't be seen or dodged in anyway
- Scourgings - A beating with a multi-ended whip. Each end contains either barbs or lead balls.
- John 19:19-22 - YHWH is the first letter of each hebrew word used on Jesus' cross and spells the Jewish name of God ("Yahweh")
- Body Positioning on the Cross
- Try standing with your knees bent at a 45 degree angle for awhile.
- Placement of the nails and the affects on the body includes severed nerves.
- Psalms 22 - Written by David about his own sufferings, not a prophet.
- verse 1 - Matthew 27:46 Jesus and God were one up until now.
- verse 6 - Mark 15:9-14 The people hated Jesus
- verse 7 - Matthew 27:39-43 He was mocked
- verse 14 - John 19:33-36 Water flowed from his side and his bones were not broken BUT they were out of joint. After hanging on the cross for a few hours the pressure on the shoulders and elbows becomes so intense that the bones come loose from their sockets. The arms can become six to nine inches longer.
- verse 15 - John 19:28-29 He was thirsty
- verse 16 - David wrote this before crucifiction was even invented. Yet it mirrors our Lord's death. In crucifiction, three nails were used. One in each wrist and one into both feet.
- verse 18 - Mark 15:24 Casting lots for his garments.
- verse 19-21 - Jesus' plea for help? ("my darling" can be translated "my only son")
- verse 31 - John 19:30 "It is finished"
- Observations
- Luke 23:34 - Why did Jesus ask God to forgive them?
- Matthew 26:53-54 - So was it truly the nails that held Jesus to the cross or was it something else?
- John 15:13-14 - The answer is because of love.
