- Introduction - Genesis 22:8
- Abraham's statement is messianic as well, for God himself did provide a sacrifice.
- The Only Beloved Son
- Genesis 22:2 - Notice the terminology
here: Thine only son and whom thou lovest. These are important because they
echo the future sacrifice of God's only begotten son.
- Matthew 17:5 - God loves his son too.
- John 3:16 - God loved us enough to sacrifice
his only son. Just as Abraham loved God enough to sacrifice Isaac.
- Willing Sacrifice
- Galatians 1:3-4, Galatians 2:20 - He freely gave according to God's will.
- Genesis 22:9 - Here we have a son approximately 15 years of age
who knows who sacrifices are performed and knows that only blood sacrifices are accepted. He knows that his father
did not bring an animal to sacrifice. Now his father approximately 115 years old begins to bind him and set him upon
an alter. We do not read of any protest or struggle. This is a willing participant because of his faith in Abraham
and God.
- Bearing the Wood
- John 19:16-18 - Christ was made to carry the cross upon which he was to die.
- Genesis 22:5-6 - Likewise Isaac was made to carry the wood upon which he was to die.
- The Place of Sacrifice
- Genesis 22:2 - Moriah is first mentioned. God has a specific mountain in this region
picked out for the sacrifice. This sacrifice was special and required a special location.
- Genesis 22:4 - Abraham sees it from afar, we might assume that it was a summit of a mountain.
- 2 Chronicles 3:1 - The temple is built in this mount. History tells that the temple was in
Jerusalem where it was later destroyed, then rebuilt. It remained as Herod's Temple at the time of Christ. So mount Moriah is where Jerusalem
is. Geography shows that Jerusalem is not located on the highest point of this mount.
- John 19:16-18 - Golgotha is Hebrew for skull, the latin translation is Calvaria thus our term
Calvary. Nobody knows the exact geographical location of Golgotha but the most popular theory is just north of the Jersalem walls on a desolate peak
the resembles a skull (hence the name Golgotha). This by the way happens to be the highest point of Moriah (777 meters above sealevel), making it the
summit. If this was the same summit seen and used by Abraham then that would in fact pull the two events closer together and explain God's
reasoning for the location of Isaac's sacrifice.
- 3 Days
- Matthew 17:22-23,1 Corinthians 15:3-4 - Christ resurrected the third day.
- Genesis 22:2-4 - Abraham hears the command for God and complies, thus in his mind sacrificing Isaac to God. Isaac is dead
to Abraham for 3 days until the angel stays his hand, thus resurrecting Isaac to Abraham.
- Conclude with the Substituted Sacrifice
- Genesis 22:13 - In the end, God provides a substitute for the sacrifice of Isaac.
- Ephesians 5:2 - Christ became our sacrifice to God
- Hebrews 7:25-27 - He replaced the daily sacrifices for sin by dying for us. And that is the subject of the entire bible
from front to back. This story is given to us in many forms in the scripture but always points to the same conclusion. The love of our Lord Jesus Christ and the sacrifice
he gave us on the cross.
