- Introduction
- The Gospel of Luke is a unique telling of the Gospel because Luke was not present during
the events and that Luke was more than likely a Gentile and not a Jew. He wrote the
Gospel events as a Historian using eye witness accounts and interviews as well as the use
of the other Gospels that were already available. He writes from a clinical and
detailed standpoint probably because of his medical background. He also wrote the
book of Acts.
- Chronology of Events
- Luke 23:55-56 - Women watch the burial and
prepare spices.
- Matthew 28:2-8
- Women come to the tomb to embalm Jesus
- Angels appear and roll away the stone
- Guards faint
- Angels tell the women that Jesus has risen and to go tell disciples
- Women go to tell the disciples
- Luke 24:8-11 - The disciples don't belief the message.
- John 20:3-10 - John and Peter race to the tomb, find it empty, then leave.
- John 20:11-18 - Mary stays behind and sees Jesus
- Luke 24:13-35 - Two men (one perhaps also named Simon) meet Jesus on the road to Emmaus.
- Luke 24:36-40 - Jesus appears to the apostles and disciples and proves that he's not a spirit.
- John 20:24-29 - Thomas doubts; Jesus appears eight days later and convinces Thomas.
- John 21:1-14 - Jesus appears to the disciples fishing.
- John 21:15-23 - Jesus reconciles Peter and gives him charge to lead the building of the Church. Ties in to
Jesus's promise that Peter would be the rock to build on (Matthew 16:15-19) and Peter's laying the first bricks
of the Church in Acts 2.
- John 20:30-31 - Unknown events
- Luke 24:44-49 - The Great Commission
- Acts 1:9-12 - The Ascension
- Christ's Resurrected Body
- John 20:17 - Touch (strongs 680) meaning:
Do not examine my body OR Do not cling to this physical body. Nothing mystical is really implied.
It is more of a statement that such action should not be needed. In standing with New Testament
logic, the will of God is no longer based on the physical but on the spiritual. Christ is basically
saying, Don't hold on to this body now that I am risen I am always with you spiritually.
- Luke 24:38-43 - Here he encourages them to
touch his resurrected body to prove that he is not spirit. To continue this point, he asks for food.
Therefore there could not have been any metaphysical reason that Mary was asked to restrain from
touching him.
- John 20:25-28 - Again Jesus invites someone to
touch his body, this time to dispel doubts in Thomas that it really is Jesus.
- 1 Corinthians 15:35-51 - Concerning Spiritual Bodies
- Revelation 20:12-15 - John saw the all dead raised and
judged. Even those dead for thousands of years whose remains would no longer exist. Their raised bodies would
have to be similar to that of Christ's. Spiritual but not Spirit.
- Christ's Message During His 40 Day Stay.
- He is always present. Christ appears instantly in closed rooms, then vanishes the same way. Just as
whenever we need him, he is there.
- The Gospel must be preached. The Great Commission.
- The Church must grow and be edified as exemplified in his admonition to Peter
- Significance of upward ascencion. By ascending upward the apostles knew that they could not follow
and since he'd been dissappearing on a regular basis. The disciples needed to see this to avoid any
confusion that Christ was going to be with his father in Heaven.
